“There is no time to staring off into space during rehearsal, petit enfant.”

Feeling a hand grasp her shoulder firmly, the woman came to her senses with a start, hands catching the wall to keep herself from stumbling into it. “Mother!” She gasped soundlessly, eyes meeting the stern gaze of Madame Giry- the choreographer of the corps de ballet at the Opera Garnier. For as long as they had been keeping residence within the opera house, the younger Giry had always known her mother to take each piece of the opera to heart, particularly the young troupe of female dancers she had taken herself to teach, her daughter being among them. Knowing this, the youthful blond dancer would have taken it upon herself to nod her head in shame and offer a curt, ‘yes madame’- had she felt shamed by her distance from the rehearsal being undertaken. For once, however, the woman felt no guilt, instead she lifted her head, tender pink lips curling into a smile that embodied the innocence of the woman herself. “Can’t you hear it, mama?” She inquired softly, never forgetting that she had been cued up backstage with the rest of the chorus girls for the next scene in the opera and could not let herself be heard. “Meg-” Madame Giry began, still awaiting some form of acknowledgment from her child. As if to answer Meg’s question, the next verse of the song came to life on stage, filling the stage with a mysticism that even the youthful ballerina with her wandering imagination could barely conceive. ‘We never said our love was evergreen, or as unchanging as the sea-’ “Just listen to her, mama,” Meg sighed wistfully, turning her face towards the light of the stage where the source of the music was coming from. “That’s Chrstine,” she continued, smile lingering on her lips as she felt her pride toward her friend begin to well up within her. “Our Christine- they’d be foolish not to let her keep the role.”
